Church for Children
Junior Church is a fun and inclusive time each Sunday for children of all ages and abilities to explore their faith at Augustine United Church.
We begin each Sunday in church with the congregation for the first part of the service and then meet in our own group. We like participating in worship and showing everyone what we have been doing in Junior Church. There are usually four special all age worship services at Augustine each year too. Augustine celebrates communion every other week - sometimes we share Communion in church and sometimes the elders bring Communion to us in our room.
We use a rotational model for organising our sessions. This means that we take a topic for a few weeks and address it from several angles. We chose this method because we feel that it is really important to use a wide range of approaches so that we build on the different strengths and interests of all the children in Junior Church. A variety of activities helps each individual find ways to engage with God’s stories and God’s presence in their lives in their own way.
We also include storytelling and especially Godly Play. We like Godly Play because it helps children to think about the stories and to ask and answer questions for themselves. Our approach is inclusive and we aim to help children of all ages and abilities join in, wonder and respond at their own level.
Our theme for 2016-17 is “Trust in God. Reach out to others” and we are using a selection of material from the PowerExpress! rotational curriculum. From September to June we will be looking at stories where people have put their trust in God and also at how God has enabled them to grow and reach out others. We will be thinking about how God may be calling us to trust and also inspiring us to use our own lives.
Our autumn units are: How the Bible came to be; out of Egypt; people who made a difference [Deborah and Jeremiah]; and the Christmas story. In the Spring and Summer we will look at: the Beatitudes, lost and found parables; Martha of Bethany; symbols of Holy Week; Easter – go and tell; and women of faith.
We will look at each unit for several weeks and explore ideas in lots of different way. So on the first Sunday we might do storytelling, then revisit the topic in later weeks through games; crafts; drama; food; video or through world issues. In each unit we learn new stories and expand on the larger theme for the year. We cover roughly one unit a month. We like to use Godly Play stories whenever we can and are fortunate to have a trained storyteller. You can find out more about Godly Play here http://www.godlyplayscotland.co.uk/
Our activities are flexible and can be adapted for children from toddlers onwards. A crèche is available for very young children. Our adult helpers at Junior Church and Crèche are PVG checked and we follow the URC Safeguarding policy.
We re-join the congregation at the end of the service for drinks and biscuits. Accessible toilets and nappy changing facilities are available.
